On Threads, a second-grade child's notebook circulated.

Wondering what she had written, the parent opened it — pages full of cats.

Left page, cats. Right page, cats. Cats in each boxed space — cat, cat, cat. Overflowing with cats.

But looking closely, they are not all the same.

A sleepy cat. An angry cat. A surprised cat. A cat with eyes closed. A troubled cat. Different mouths. Slightly different ear angles.

This is not mere repetition.

Drawing the same cat while making each one a little different.

Children sometimes enter this kind of proliferation.

Draw the same thing many times. Repeat the same shape. Fill the page. Yet not make perfect copies.

Adults get bored. Think of efficiency. Why not one cat?

But children draw dozens — and put slightly different expressions into each.

I think this is world-making.

A world with cats. A world made only of cats. Looking alike yet each with its own face.

The name free notebook (jiyucho) is good too — not for correct answers alone; cats may fill it.

By a second-grader's hand, cats multiply. A small flock forms on the page.

Threadsで、小2の娘さんの自由帳が流れてきた。

何を書いているのかなと思って見てみたら、ページいっぱいに猫がいた。

左のページにも猫。右のページにも猫。マスのように区切られた場所に、猫、猫、猫。まさに、猫で溢れている。

でも、よく見ると、全部同じではない。

眠そうな猫がいる。怒っている猫がいる。びっくりしている猫がいる。目を閉じた猫がいる。困っている猫がいる。口の形が違う猫がいる。耳の角度が少し違う猫がいる。

これは、ただの反復ではない。同じ猫を描きながら、少しずつ違う猫にしている。

子どもは、ときどきこういう増殖に入る。

同じものを何度も描く。同じ形を繰り返す。ページを埋める。でも、完全なコピーにはしない。

大人なら、飽きる。効率を考える。一匹でいいじゃないかと思う。

でも子どもは、何十匹も描く。そして、その何十匹の中に、少しずつ違う表情を入れていく。

これは、世界を作っているのだと思う。

猫がいる世界。猫だけでできた世界。同じように見えて、ひとつずつ違う顔を持った世界。

自由帳という名前もいい。

自由帳は、学校のノートの中でも少し特別である。正解を書かなくていい。マスに合わせなくてもいい。先生に提出するためだけでもない。だから、猫で埋めてもいい。

小2の手で、猫が増えていく。ページの上に、小さな群れができる。
