When Idioms Go to the Bathroom

On Threads, images of school wrong answers circulated. On the right, a reading question: Father stood naked on the station platform holding out bills — write what you think. The child's answer: Father might be a pervert. Quite right, really. Read normally, one would think so.

The child reads quite honestly. On the left, an idiom question: 大は小を兼ねる — explain the meaning. Answer: when you have a bowel movement, you also urinate. In one sense not wrong — the idiom means the large can also serve as the small, but the child reads large and small with the body: bowel movement, urination. 兼ねる becomes happening at the same time. The idiom suddenly goes to the bathroom.

Here is the charm of children's reading. School tries to abstract language — memorize idioms, read authorial intent, guide toward correct meaning. But children first return words to life: naked father, station platform, bowel movement, urination. Words are pulled toward body and scene.
