On Threads, a mistyped get-well email circulated. The poster had written to an unwell senior colleague. They meant to say: when you have recovered, please contact me. Later they found they had actually sent: when you have become a toilet, please contact me. Not health but toilet — a polite recovery wish suddenly turned into a sentence waiting for human-to-toilet transformation.

The senior's reply was excellent: still human; I have contacted you. More than a typo joke. Mistakes are embarrassing — especially to a senior who is ill. Yet the senior did not get angry, point it out, or blame the sender. They entered the wrong language and replied by its rules. Still human — in one line failure stops being failure; awkwardness becomes laughter; the email accident becomes a small confirmation of relationship.

Japanese honorifics are sometimes excessively heavy. When you have recovered is polite and slightly stiff — which is why when you have become a toilet hits harder. Threadsで、見舞いメールの誤変換が流れてきた。体調の悪い先輩に、投稿者はメールを送った。本当は、こう書くつもりだった。「お元気になられましたらご連絡ください」

ところが、あとで見返すと、実際にはこう送っていた。「お便器になられましたらご連絡ください」元気ではなく、便器。体調が回復したら連絡してほしい、という丁寧な見舞いの言葉が、突然、人間から便器への変身を待つ文になってしまった。

しかし、先輩の返事がよかった。「人間のままですがご連絡させていただきました」ここには、ただの誤字以上のものがある。誤変換は、恥ずかしい。特に、相手が先輩で、しかも体調を崩している時なら、なおさらである。でも、先輩は怒らない。指摘もしない。投稿者を責めもしない。ただ、間違った言葉の世界に入り、その世界のルールに従って返してくれる。

「人間のままですが」——この一文で、失敗は失敗ではなくなる。気まずさは、笑いに変わる。メールの事故は、小さな関係の確認になる。日本語の敬語は、ときどき過剰に重い。「お元気になられましたら」も、丁寧で、少し硬い。でも、その硬さがあるからこそ、「お便器になられましたら」の破壊力が増す。そして、その破壊された敬語を、相手がさらに丁寧に受け止める。
