On Threads, a beach photograph circulated. In the foreground, a railing with round rings; beyond it, sand and sea. Look closely and people appear one group per circle — standing, walking, with a dog, walking as a pair, gazing into the distance. On the same beach, inside each circle, each seems a separate story.

The railing is only a railing — to protect people, to mark a boundary. Yet in the photograph it becomes a device that divides stories. One landscape splits into many small lives. What are those two talking about? Why does that person stand alone? Where is the dog looking? Does that child love the sea? Of course we do not know. But not knowing is what lets stories begin.

Public space always holds countless strangers — trains, parks, shorelines. We pass most of them without knowing names, circumstances, where they came from or where they return. Yet sometimes a frame makes them, for an instant, people who seem to carry a story. Here the frame was a circle.

Threadsで、海辺の写真が流れてきた。手前には、丸い輪のついた柵がある。その向こうに、砂浜と海が見える。よく見ると、柵の円の中に、人が一組ずつ入っている。立っている人。歩いている人。犬を連れている人。二人で並んでいる人。遠くを見ている人。同じ海辺にいるのに、円の中に入ると、それぞれが別の物語に見えてくる。

柵は、ただの柵である。人を守るため、境界を作るため、そこにある。でも、写真の中では、それが物語を分ける装置になる。ひとつの風景が、いくつもの小さな生活に分かれる。あの二人は何を話しているのか。あの人はなぜ一人で立っているのか。犬はどこを見ているのか。あの子は、海が好きなのか。もちろん、何もわからない。でも、わからないから、物語が生まれる。

公共空間には、いつも無数の他人がいる。電車にも、公園にも、海辺にも。私たちは、そのほとんどを知らないまま通り過ぎる。名前も知らない。事情も知らない。どこから来て、どこへ帰るのかも知らない。でも、ときどき、何かのフレームによって、その人たちが一瞬だけ「物語を持つ人」に見える。この写真では、それが円だった。
