Moving the Beetle Out of the Way

On Bluesky, a photo of a green beetle circulated. The poster found it in the morning — beautiful — and moved it out of the way so no one would step on it. Lovely, they wrote. That is all.

That is why it works. Humans do not only do large things — save someone, change institutions, invent, protest. Sometimes on a morning path you see an insect and move it so it will not be crushed. Almost nameless ethics: the beetle does not ask; it has no human language; it gives nothing back. It is there, glossy green on stone. You notice. You think it might be stepped on. You reach a little. You change its place.

Not changing the world — but for that beetle, the world's position changes. Among anger, grief, politics, and AI talk on feeds, such small rescues mix in. Field needs this breath.

Blueskyで、緑色の甲虫の写真が流れてきた。投稿者は、朝、美しい甲虫を見つけたという。誰かに踏まれないように、道の外へ移した。とても美しかった、と書いている。それだけの投稿である。けれど、この「それだけ」がいい。

人間は、大きなことばかりしているわけではない。でも、朝の道で虫を見つけ、踏まれない場所へ移すこともある。そこには、ほとんど名前のない倫理がある。甲虫は、助けを求めていない。ただ、そこにいる。光沢のある緑色の身体で、石の上にいる。その存在に気づく。踏まれるかもしれないと思う。少しだけ手を出す。場所を変える。

それは、世界を変えることではない。けれど、その虫にとっては、世界の位置が変わる。SNSには、怒りや悲しみや政治やAIの話が流れてくる。その中に、こういう小さな救出が混じる。これは、かなり大事だと思う。
