When Fandom Enters the Office

On Threads, a short workplace story circulated. An office woman was low in spirits — an Arashi fan, apparently. Five male colleagues said in front of her: actually, we are Arashi. The reply: die. Funny — yet not mere office joke.

Fandom lives outside work — TV, lives, SNS, tickets, news, hiatus, reunion. Supposedly unrelated to the job. Yet when something happens to your favorite, expression at work changes, hands pause on email, lunch talk shifts, air sinks. Colleagues notice and try to lighten the room. Here they borrowed only the form of five and cast themselves as Arashi. It fails.

A favorite is not a headcount. Five people do not suffice; being a group is not enough. Memory, time, songs, programs, lives, youth, years of cheering live there. We are Arashi is substitution of form only — so anger returns. From outside fandom looks light; for the person it is part of life. Workplace relations sometimes fail loudly trying to handle that feeling.

Threadsで、短い職場の話が流れてきた。会社の事務の女性が、全然元気がなかった。彼女は嵐のファンだったらしい。それを見た同僚の男性5人組が、本人の前でこう言った。「いや僕たちが嵐です」。すると、返ってきた言葉は、「死ね」だった。

笑ってしまう。けれど、これはただの職場ジョークではない。推しは、職場の外にある存在である。テレビ、ライブ、SNS、チケット、ニュース、発表、解散、復活。本来なら仕事とは関係がない。でも、推しに何かが起きると、仕事中の表情が変わる。周囲の人たちは、それを察する。そして、なんとか場を軽くしようとする。

この場合、同僚たちは5人組という形式だけを借りて、自分たちを嵐に見立てた。でも、それは失敗する。推しは人数ではない。5人いればいいわけではない。そこには、記憶、時間、曲、番組、ライブ、青春、応援してきた年月がある。「僕たちが嵐です」は、形式だけの代替である。だから、怒られる。
