The Aquarium Is Too Small

Fish help each other in the open sea. Put them in a narrow aquarium, and bullying appears.

People who bully are living in a small world.

This is a story about fish — and also about humans.

School classrooms. Company departments. Small local ties. Families. SNS timelines. Industry inner circles.

When the world narrows, others come too close. Escape routes disappear. Comparison thickens. Rank appears. People try to secure their place by pushing someone down.

Of course the responsibility of those who bully does not vanish.

Yet what these words point to sits a little further upstream.

People confined in narrow places sometimes lose the ability to stay kind. Beings who might otherwise help each other begin to wound each other.

So what is needed is not sermon alone.

Widen the aquarium. Prepare other places. Leave a path of escape. Let people know the world is not only here.

Bullying is a problem of the heart — and of the environment.

Fish that can help each other in the wide sea wound each other in a narrow tank.

Humans, too, should sometimes check the size of the aquarium they are in.
