On Threads, a post about a reunion circulated.
Twenty-two years ago, the poster's birth mother was in her third year of junior high, the account says.
She became pregnant at fifteen and gave birth at sixteen.
She knew her parents would oppose telling them.
She told her partner at the time.
He said they would raise the child together.
Yet he died in a traffic accident before the child was born.
The child who was born then grew up in another family.
Twenty-two years later, she reunites with her birth mother.
The post included photographs of handwritten letters.
From mother to child. From child to mother. And to the not-yet-born future child.
The letters held not blame but gratitude.
Thank you for wanting to meet. Thank you for living well. Thank you for giving birth to me. Thank you for praying for my happiness.
This post is heavy because it does not make any one person the correct one.
A mother who was too young. A birth father who died before birth. The parents who raised the child. A daughter who lived apart for twenty-two years.
Each had things that could not be said.
And time no one can recover.
There is no memory from immediately after birth.
No memory of the father who died.
Only the mother herself knows how frightened she was when young.
Yet after twenty-two years, one can write a letter.
Letters are a strange medium.
They hold what cannot be said on the spot.
They put into words emotions that would break if spoken aloud.
When one cannot return to the past, one can offer words toward the future.
These letters hold time in many layers.
A fifteen-year-old mother. A child not yet born. A dead father. The family that raised her. A daughter now twenty-two. And the mother's current family.
Clothes chosen with the words wear them as a family of four are not mere gifts.
They become a wish that the family there now may be filled with smiles, in place of the time they could not live together.
This is a reunion story.
Yet it is not a simple moral tale.
Not a story that one should easily tell a young pregnant person to give birth.
Not a story that separation always leads to gratitude later.
Every choice leaves time that cannot be returned and wounds that remain.
Yet this post has one quiet arrival point.
I'm glad I kept trying to live until now.
In that one line, twenty-two years of blank space.
Time when they could not meet. Voices they could not hear. Circumstances they did not know. Days when photographs alone brought reassurance. What was thought each birthday.
From the moment of birth, people live inside stories they did not choose.
Yet as adults, they can sometimes answer those stories with different words.
Not resentment. Not blame. Not explanation.
Thank you.

Threads
