The 90s Were a Route, Not a Style

On Threads, 1990s memory circulated almost entirely as place-names and proper nouns — Love Tambourines, Kahimi Karie, Cardigans, Lenny Kravitz, Jamiroquai, Tower Records, HMV, Kyoko Okazaki, Erika Sakurazawa, Mari Okazaki, Shinobu Nishimura, Olive, agnès b., Cardigan Pression, A!CCHI CHI!, F.O.B COOP, Mary Quant, Inkstick, Shimokitazawa ZOO, Mishuku Web, Fujisoba or Yoshinoya after dawn, buffuuu for first train in Shimokitazawa.

The poster ends: the 90s were so fun you cannot explain why — youth. Not mere nostalgia. An urban walking pattern remains: music was not searched but visited — stand at shelves, learn unknown names at listening posts. Manga, magazines, clothes, hair, shops, nightlife scattered across the city; you walked to collect them — Shibuya, Shimokitazawa, Mishuku, Tower Records, HMV, tea at cafes, clubs at night, wait for first train.

From now it looks cumbersome — yet inside that trouble were body, movement, chance, time walking with friends, broke mornings eating soba or gyudon. 90s Style was not outfit alone: what you heard, read, which shop, which street, where you cut hair, where you crossed night, where you restored the body at dawn. A list of nouns reads bodily.

Today much lives on screen — searchable music, clothes, manga, shop info. This post remembers not information but the road to information, the body until morning, time fun beyond later explanation.

最後に——何がそんなに楽しかったんだろうっていうくらい楽しかった90年代。青春だったな。ただの懐古ではない。90年代の都市の歩き方が残っている。音楽は検索ではなく店。棚の前、試聴機、知らない名前を覚える。漫画も雑誌も服も髪も店も夜も、街に散らばっていた。拾いに歩く——渋谷、下北、三宿、タワレコ、HMV、カフェ、クラブ、始発。

面倒くさい——その中に身体、移動、偶然、友だちと歩く時間、お金がない朝のそばや牛丼があった。90年代のStyleは服装だけではない。何を聴き、何を読み、どの店にいたか、どの街を歩いたか、どこで夜を越し、朝どこで身体を戻したか——全部がひとつのスタイル。固有名詞のリストが、妙に身体的に読める。

いまは画面の中に多くがある。でもこの投稿が思い出しているのは情報ではない。情報にたどり着く道。夜を越えて朝になる身体。あとから説明できないくらい楽しかった時間。
